FRAGOL barrier fluids are used as a physical barrier between process fluids and system boundaries, allowing the process fluid to develop its chemical and physical properties unhindered. At the same time, FRAGOL barrier fluids protect the sealing materials used and ensure the process fluid is sealed from the atmosphere. Pipe walls, sealing materials, and storage vessels are both lubricated and protected from corrosion.
FRAGOL barrier fluids are also used to prevent leaks and contamination.
Selection criteria for barrier fluids are:
- Chemical compatibility with process fluid and sealing materials
- Sufficient lubricating properties for sliding surface lubrication
- Appropriate viscosity for optimum performance
- High specific heat and thermal conductivity for efficient heat transfer
- Low volatility to minimise evaporation and frequent refilling
- Minimised gas solubility to avoid bubble formation
- Long-term stability and degradation resistance
- Special requirements such as H1 registration (barrier fluids for food industry)

After determining the system parameters, the lubrication technician (or tribologist) can use various lubricant compositions to select a lubricant that optimizes the application's performance. Since each chemical composition has its own advantages and disadvantages, selecting the correct composition is critical to meeting the system's tribological parameters.
